Triphala Ghee (Grita), Organic, 170g

£31.95

A grita is an Ayurvedic traditional mixture in which ghee (clarified butterfat) is combined with a herb – in this case the beloved Triphala. We only use organic ghee made from hay butter in this line of Classic Ayurvedic Gritas.

Triphala Ghee can be used both internally and externally.

Triphala

Triphala, which means ‘three fruits’, is considered the most important nutritional supplement and Rasayana in Ayurveda. It consists of equal parts of the three fruits Amla (Amalaki or Indian gooseberry), Haritaki (panicle myrobalan), and Bibhitaki (green bastard myrobalan). Amla primarily soothes Pitta dosha, Haritaki primarily calms Vata, and Bibhitaki primarily pacifies Kapha. The combination of the three fruits serves to balance all three doshas.

Overview

  • Latin names: Emblica officinalis (Amla), Terminalia chebula (Haritaki), Terminalia bellirica (Bibhitaki)
  • Ayurvedic product from controlled organic cultivation
  • Countries of origin: India and Austria
  • Has a balancing effect on all three doshas

Why is a herbal grita sometimes prescribed?

The ghee itself (grita) offers a lipid medium that enhances the bioavailability of fat-soluble components (e.g., ellagic acid). According to Ayurveda, grita is Guru (heavy), Snigdha (unctuous), and Medhya (mind-nourishing), which supports deeper penetration into Shleshaka Kapha (lubricative tissue) and Brimhana (nourishment) of all dhatus (bodily tissues).

Triphala Grita’s combination works by:

  • Soothing Ama (toxins) in the gut lining via Snigdha guna, improving digestive fire (Agni).
  • Promoting mild laxation (Adho-gati) to clear Pitta and Kapha stagnation.
  • Exerting antioxidant activity—scavenging free radicals and inhibiting lipid peroxidation.
  • Modulating gut microbiota: polyphenols in Triphala encourage beneficial strains like Bifidobacterium.
